A Long Run

I have been wanting to do a 20KM run for over a month, but have failed to do so.

The blame lies on me. Every time I decided to do the long run, my mind would come up with excuses: “It’s too cold”, “You have a submission in a few days”, “The roads are too hilly”, “It’s too dark”, “My leg is hurting”, “There is nobody to run with”, etc. The thing which I wasn’t able to do all these days was to make the lazy part of my mind SHUT UP!

The other thing which had happened, due to my running hiatus, was I had forgotten what it was like to be friends with pain. And what it’s like to cheat your mind to go farther; push harder.

Today I decided to solve these things, by playing the easiest trick — to run till Santa Monica beach just with a water bottle and house keys. The beach is 10 KM from my place. One way. If I was coming back, it was only on foot. The reason why I decided to do this was because all along I had been doing loops near my house. Which made it very easy to quit before the target mileage. And quit I did. Multiple times. I would have decided to do 4 loops, when towards the end of the 2nd I would be like “yeah, this is enough for today.” I didn’t want it to happen again.

The trick worked. I ran 20 KM (2:04:37, breaks included). Coming back was quite tough, because it was all uphill. The timing is nothing to write home about, but it was a satisfying run.
