First Runs

I have been running for a little over 2 years now. The past two months though I haven’t run much due to a ligament injury, which I’m still recovering from. It’s still there. A little niggle here, a little pain there. It still hasn’t gone completely. But I’m now just fed up of it.

Running is the only weapon I have against grad school. It works to cure anything: sadness, boredom, anger, frustration, procrastination, etc. And you get a lot of all those here. So I run in spite of the little physical pain which I have to undergo.

I have been doing short runs. Little 5Ks nearby my house. The terrain is hilly. Lots of ups and downs. The surface is mostly concrete. Unlike India you can’t really run on the road. Though in India I also used to do a lot of running inside parks, which I haven’t done here yet. Most of my runs are in the dusk, after college. In fact, now that I think about it, not a single of my runs have been during day time. I wonder what it’s like.

I still have my faithful Garmin, to tell me the time, distance and help me when I get lost. I carry only that and my house keys. Whenever I approach someone, I helpfully jingle the keys to alert them of my presence. There have been couple of times, when I have sneaked behind someone and really scared them (I had to stop and apologize).

There is a running group called the Bruin Runners. In fact I did one group run with them at the very beginning of the quarter. Which was real fun, but after that I have been so tied up and lazy that I haven’t gone again for their runs. Maybe I should.

Today I did my first 10K  in a span of 3 months. I did it in a respectable pace and finished in 56:02. It was a test to see whether my legs will hold up for longer distances than 5K. The bigger test being whether they will hold up if I chose to run the LA marathon. That is the question which needs to be answered.
